From the XVIth century to nowadays
Our region shows a difficult journey to peace, comprehension
and respect of ideas as it was deeply marked by Reformation from the
XVIth century, by persecutions from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries,
by departures to European places of safety.
The main exhibition through centuries insists on the importance of the
Bible for Protestants and makes visitors think over the present
religious confrontations by comparing them to past ones.
Every year a temporary exhibition on a chosen theme completes the
permanent one. An advanced student in history is in charge of the
visits in July and August and volunteers of the Association are the
rest of the year.
When visiting the museum of Protestantism in Haut-Languedoc visitors
will notice two interesting points: first of all the local churches
that have been influenced by the rites of French Protestantism as a
whole, with
real specificities however; then the apparent paradox
between the withdrawal into their granite area and their
"desert" and the opening onto the world through
intellectual life, economy and the welcoming of refugees.
The Tarn Mountains, like the Cévènnes
and the Chambon sur Lignon Plateau deserve to exist on the map of
freedom of thought which was first "freedom of conscience". |
